Arjun Kapoor said he ‘fears loss’ due to his mother’s death and father’s second marriage, and it has affected his romantic relationships.
Actor Arjun Kapoor opened up about his ex-partner Malaika Arora being there for him when he lost his adoptive father recently. He said he wanted to respect the emotional bond, and reflected on his past relationships. The actor said he would like to consider himself a good boyfriend, but admitted his personal trauma has affected his romantic relationships. In an interview, Arjun said that due to his mother’s death and his parents’ separation, he enters relationships with the assumption that they won’t last long.
Appearing on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Arjun said that he has gone through ‘ups and downs’ in his personal life recently, and one can never tell if the ‘right’ person will prove to be wrong in the end. When asked why he decided to be there for Malaika in her hour of need, he cited the impulse that came at the time of his father’s wife Sridevi’s sudden death in 2018. Arjun had tried to mend his relationship with her even then.
He said, “When what happened with dad and Khushi-Jhanvi, there was an impulse behind it. And in this case too, there was an instinct and impulse. If I have formed an emotional bond with someone, I would always want to believe that I will be there regardless of the good and the bad. If I am called for the good, I will be there. And if I am needed for the bad, I will be there. I am not a person who has a lot of friends, I am not doing it for everyone. If that person doesn’t want me there, I will maintain a distance, as I have done before.”
“Today, the media and the industry have also changed. When I started out, and when I was growing up, a lot of things were secretive, and for the right reasons. Gossiping is one thing, but as soon as you confirm something, there’s a culture of wanting to know everything. Everyone has a phone, forget the paps,” the actor said.
Arjun Kapoor express it’s always wise to make a relationship public, because if you’re seen meeting your partner secretly it looks suspicious. “It spoils the relationship. It’s wise to open up about your partner in a dignified way… I’m a private person. It took me a while to come out on social media. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar forced me to come on social media after 2 States,” Arjun said.
He added that these days, actors don’t really have a choice whether they want to make their relationship public or not, because people will know about them anyway. And when they do, the speculation will only increase. Arjun said that he doesn’t fear commitment, but he has a ‘fear of loss’ because of what has happened to him in the past. “There is a difference. My mother left me, my father made a choice. So, there is a fear of loss. There is a feeling that eventually, everyone will leave.”
