After the President of India gave his consent, the Ministry of Law and Justice formally announced the appointment on Monday. Justice Habung has served as an extra judge in the Gauhati High Court since being promoted to the bench in 2023. Northeastern citizens, governmental officials, and legal experts are hailing Justice Habung’s elevation as a historic occasion. He is from the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. In order to guarantee more participation of the tribal and northeastern populations in India’s higher judiciary, his appointment is viewed as a positive step. After graduating from Delhi University with a law degree, Justice Habung started practicing law. He held a number of significant positions in the Arunachal Pradesh judiciary before being promoted, including District and Sessions Judge. Throughout his legal career, Justice Habung has ruled over a number of high-profile cases and is well-known for his honesty and commitment.

State leaders have offered their congratulations. Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, was pleased with the outcome and described it as “a proud and inspirational moment for the state and its youth.” The ruling has also been praised by legal experts, who point out that it improves the Indian justice system’s inclusion. Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh are within the jurisdiction of the Gauhati High Court, which has its main office in Guwahati. It is anticipated that Justice Habung’s appointment as a permanent judge will improve judicial representation and outreach in the area.
