Arunachal Pradesh farmers have been advised to switch from traditional pig-rearing techniques to contemporary, commercial ways in order to increase revenue and guarantee sustainable livelihoods. The necessity of scientific methods in pig raising was emphasized by Agriculture Minister Gabriel Denwang Wangsu when speaking at an awareness program in Kanubari, Longding district. He urged farmers to stop raising only one or two pigs as is customary and instead use biosafety precautions.
In cooperation with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Longding, the program was organized under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig, Rani, Guwahati. Modern problems call for modern answers. The minister stated that the government will expand beneficiary-oriented programs and has facilities available for the processing and marketing of meat. In order to maximize outreach to farmers, he also instructed KVK and department officials to collaborate closely.
In order to allay participants’ concerns about pig farming methods, the program also included interaction sessions between farmers and experts. The minister later visited development sites, including as PMGSY road projects, the local water treatment facility, the future Model Degree College, and the Industrial Training Institute at Mopakhat.
