Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday underscored the transformative potential of the 2,880-megawatt Dibang Multipurpose Project (DMP), saying it promises far more than electricity. Speaking during an inspection of preparatory works at the project site in Munli, Khandu emphasized that the project will generate employment, strengthen local finances, and create new opportunities in tourism and business.
Accompanied by NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Kumar Singh, the Chief Minister interacted with engineers and workers, praising their dedication. “Arunachal Pradesh is set to receive about Rs 700 crore every year in free power from the 2,880-MW Dibang Multipurpose Project alone,” Khandu posted on X (formerly Twitter). He added, “More than the megawatts, the project is about jobs for our youth, funds for local development, and new opportunities in tourism and business. It’s about making sure that the people of Dibang and across Arunachal feel the impact of growth in their daily lives.”
Officials noted that the DMP, being India’s largest hydropower initiative, will also play a critical role in flood moderation, benefiting downstream areas in Assam. Preparatory works are in full swing, with supporting infrastructure such as roads and bridges being developed, overcoming earlier challenges related to land acquisition and environmental clearances.
Scheduled for completion by 2032, the project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for locals. Analysts believe that beyond energy production, the DMP will act as a catalyst for overall economic growth in Arunachal Pradesh, particularly in the remote Dibang Valley region.
