Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo highlighted the critical need for disaster preparedness, particularly since Arunachal Pradesh falls under the seismically active Zone V. Speaking during an earthquake preparedness mock drill on Tuesday near the walk-through market, Angmo stressed that while earthquakes strike without warning, proper preparedness can greatly reduce casualties and damage. She urged the public to take the drill seriously and learn the safety measures being demonstrated.
The mock exercise was jointly organized by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire & Emergency Services Itanagar under the Department of Disaster Management. Tawang SP Dr. DW Thongon encouraged attendees to internalize the safety protocols, noting that these skills could be life-saving.
SDRF & Fire Services SP John Pada emphasized the community’s role in the initial response to disasters and the importance of grassroots awareness. District Disaster Management Officer Genden Tsomu announced an upcoming safety audit across the district.
During the drill, SDRF personnel showcased rescue techniques, evacuations, and fire safety, while fire services demonstrated extinguisher use. Fire extinguishers were also distributed to three local market committees to improve fire readiness.
