Naharlagun (2)

In a significant blow to the drug network in Arunachal Pradesh, the Naharlagun Police on Monday arrested a 23-year-old suspected drug peddler and seized a substantial quantity of suspected heroin. The arrest was made during a meticulously planned operation based on specific intelligence inputs received around 3 PM on June 30.

The police team, led by Inspector Krishnendu Dev and supported by Sub-Inspector Niri Rama, Constables Sanu T Raaj and Likha Akin, and Lady Head Constable Nime Taba, conducted a swift and targeted raid at the Damsite area of Naharlagun. The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of SDPO Rishi Longdo (APPS) and in the presence of Executive Magistrate Shri Khoda Bath, ensuring all legal procedures were followed in accordance with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

During the raid, the suspect—identified as Techi Lala, a resident of Rakap Village in Papumpare District—was caught red-handed while allegedly consuming drugs. A personal search, conducted under Section 50 of the NDPS Act, led to the recovery of a used syringe, an empty plastic vial, and another half-used vial containing what appeared to be heroin.

However, it was the search of a two-wheeler, a Scooty bearing registration number AR 01J/2244, that yielded the more serious find. Hidden beneath the seat, the officers discovered 15 small plastic vials filled with suspected heroin. The total weight of the recovered substance, including the vials, was recorded at 18.8 grams.

A formal case has been registered at the Naharlagun Police Station under Case No. NLG/PS/C/No. 85/25. The sections invoked—21(b), 27, and 29 of the NDPS Act—pertain to possession, consumption, and possible conspiracy in drug-related offenses. The accused has been taken into custody and further interrogation is underway to trace the supply chain.

Superintendent of Police Dr Nyelam Nega praised the police team for their prompt action and professionalism in conducting the raid without any lapse. He reaffirmed the Arunachal Pradesh Police Department’s firm stand against the drug menace, stating, “We have a zero-tolerance policy against narcotics. Such operations will continue across the district.”

He also urged citizens to come forward with information, emphasizing the critical role that public cooperation plays in eradicating drug abuse from society. “Community support is key. We appeal to people to alert the police if they notice suspicious activity in their neighborhoods,” Dr Nega added.

The arrest and recovery have sent a strong message to drug networks operating in the region, as authorities step up enforcement to curb the rising concerns around substance abuse, particularly among youth.

As investigations progress, police hope to uncover further leads that may help dismantle larger drug trafficking networks operating in the area.
