The Itanagar Capital Police have revealed a significant inter-state luxury car theft operation, leading to the recovery of 57 high-end vehicles valued at over ₹30 crore.
The criminal group employed forged documents, altered engine numbers, and established connections across multiple states to market the stolen vehicles as second-hand.
The cars were taken from urban regions such as Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Maharashtra, and subsequently sent to Arunachal Pradesh.
The gang took advantage of gaps in interstate transport regulations and vehicle re-registration processes, complicating the tracing of the original ownership.
Five individuals have been apprehended, including intermediaries and vehicle dealers who are believed to have played crucial roles in the operation.
The police are concerned about the possibility of additional smuggling activities using similar methods and are actively cross-referencing the VAHAN and NCRB databases.
