In a renewed effort to ensure the safety of visitors, the Tawang District Administration, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, has issued a fresh advisory for tourists planning to visit the region’s high-altitude destinations. The advisory, released on January 7, 2025, comes in response to reports of tourists disregarding safety warnings and venturing onto frozen lakes for photographs, putting their lives at risk.
The affected sites include popular tourist spots such as Sela Pass, Bumla Pass, Sho-nga-tser Lake, PT Tso, and the sacred Chumi Gyatse (Holy Waterfalls). Tourists are being urged to exercise heightened caution while exploring these areas, especially during the winter months when conditions can be particularly hazardous.
Key Safety Guidelines:
Avoid Entering Frozen Lakes: Visitors are strongly advised against stepping onto frozen lakes. The ice can be unstable and may not support human weight, posing a serious safety hazard.
Prevent Littering: To protect Tawang’s pristine environment, tourists are urged not to litter. Visitors should use designated dustbins and avoid carrying non-biodegradable materials or single-use plastic.
Follow Local Instructions: Tourists are encouraged to adhere to the guidance of local authorities, tour guides, or rescue teams in case of emergencies, ensuring safe practices throughout their visit.
Weather Awareness: Before traveling, tourists should check weather forecasts and road conditions. Avoid venturing into mountainous areas during heavy snowfall or extreme weather conditions.
Travel Precautions:
Equip vehicles with non-skid chains to navigate snow-covered roads safely.
Carry warm clothing, emergency kits, and communication devices for added protection.
Limit exposure to extreme temperatures, especially for those susceptible to high-altitude sickness.
Utilize experienced drivers for navigating the snow-laden roads.
Acclimatization and Health Precautions:
Tourists are advised to properly acclimatize before traveling to high-altitude regions.
Those with pre-existing health conditions should consult with a medical professional, carry necessary medications, and take additional precautions during their stay.
