In a significant move to strengthen healthcare services, the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, launched the State Treatment Protocol for Diabetes Mellitus and updated Standard Treatment Protocols (STPs) for Hypertension on the occasion of World Diabetes Day 2025. The official unveiling was done by Commissioner (H&FW) Pawan Kumar Sain, IAS, and Secretary (H&FW) Vivek H.P., IAS. Addressing the gathering, Commissioner Sain highlighted the importance of uniform, evidence-based protocols in tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and hypertension.
“Standardized treatment guidelines will ensure consistent clinical care, improve patient outcomes, and promote continuity of care across all levels of the health system—from Health & Wellness Centres to District Hospitals,” he said. Secretary Vivek H.P. acknowledged the critical role played by the State Expert Committee, which included Director of Medical Education Dr. Hage Ambing, TRIHMS Head of Medicine Dr. Taso Beyong, Head of Community Medicine Dr. Anoop Dev, and other public health specialists. Their comprehensive review and contextual adaptation of national guidelines ensured that the protocols cater to Arunachal Pradesh’s unique healthcare needs, including its challenging terrain and dispersed population.
Arunachal Pradesh has experienced a steady rise in diabetes, hypertension, and related complications in recent years. Although community-based screenings under the NP-NCD programme improved early detection, variations in treatment persisted due to the lack of standardized guidance. The new protocols aim to address these gaps by providing stepwise treatment algorithms, ensuring rational drug use, strengthening follow-up and referral systems, enhancing data accuracy in the NCD portal, and promoting adherence among healthcare providers.
