World Elephant Day was observed with great enthusiasm at the Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve, where Arunachal Pradesh Forest and Environment Minister Wangki Lowang reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting elephants under the national theme, “Mera Haathi Meri Virasat” (My Elephant, My Heritage). The event, organised by the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, served as both a celebration and a call to action. It highlighted the crucial role elephants play in India’s ecological balance and cultural heritage. Participants included forest officials, conservation workers, local community members, students, and wildlife enthusiasts.

A series of activities marked the day, beginning with video presentations showcasing ongoing conservation initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh. The highlight was an emotional farewell ceremony for Raj Mala, one of Namdapha’s most well-known elephants, whose years of service in the park have left a deep impact on staff and visitors alike. Plantation drives were held in multiple locations within the park, while mahouts and elephant caretakers received new field gear to aid in their work. Interactive sessions brought together various stakeholders to discuss sustainable strategies for elephant protection, ranging from habitat preservation to community-led anti-poaching measures.Minister Lowang praised the dedication of the forest department staff, noting their “relentless service in safeguarding Arunachal’s wildlife.” He called on all citizens to play a role in conservation efforts, saying, “This occasion is a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to protect wildlife and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”

Namdapha National Park, one of India’s richest biodiversity hotspots, spans dense forests and grasslands that serve as critical habitats for elephants, tigers, and several endangered species. The state has intensified measures to protect these habitats, including enhanced patrolling, better coordination with border security agencies, and awareness programmes for local communities.
