Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu chaired a critical review meeting on the status of the state’s hydropower projects, emphasizing the urgency of securing necessary clearances to expedite progress. The high-level Steering Committee meeting brought together top officials from the state government, along with heads of Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) such as NHPC Ltd, SJVN Ltd, NEEPCO, and THDC India Ltd. These CPSUs are spearheading 13 major hydropower projects across Arunachal Pradesh, representing a collective investment of over ₹1 lakh crore. Joint Secretary (Hydro) Mohammad Afzal from the Union Power Ministry also attended the meeting, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to the state’s hydropower potential. Chief Minister Khandu underscored the strategic importance of hydropower development for the state, citing its potential to significantly boost revenue, generate employment, and catalyze industrial growth. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate closely and address any obstacles that may hinder the progress of these projects.
“I direct all concerned departments and Deputy Commissioners to ensure that there are no delays from the state government in expediting the necessary tasks required for clearances. Hydropower is vital for our state’s revenue, employment, and economic opportunities. We must ensure that all projects move forward swiftly and efficiently,” Khandu stated. The Chief Minister also highlighted the recent Union Cabinet approval of Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to North Eastern Region (NER) state governments, including Arunachal Pradesh, for equity participation in developing hydroelectric projects. Khandu noted that Arunachal Pradesh stands to benefit significantly from this initiative, given its vast hydropower potential.
The Centre’s decision includes an allocation of ₹4,136 crore, to be implemented from FY 2024-25 to FY 2031-32, supporting a cumulative hydro capacity of approximately 15,000 MW. The projects will be partially funded through a 10% Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) designated for the North Eastern Region from the Ministry of Power’s total outlay.
