Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited a semiconductor plant in Sendai, in the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi, on Saturday, August 30, 2025. This was just one day after Tokyo and New Delhi decided to strengthen their cooperation in the vital technical area. Mr. Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba took a bullet train to Sendai, which is some 300 kilometers from Tokyo. The governor of Miyagi prefecture and other dignitaries attended a lunch thrown by Prime Minister Ishiba in Sendai in honor of Mr. Modi. According to an Indian report, PM Modi’s visit to Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi) in Sendai demonstrated how Japan’s advantages in the semiconductor industry complement India’s expanding semiconductor manufacturing environment.
One of Japan’s top semiconductor companies, TEL Miyagi, intends to work with India. TEL’s position in the global semiconductor value chain, its capacity for advanced production, and its current and upcoming partnerships with India were all explained to Mr. Modi. According to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) release, the tour provided the leaders with a hands-on understanding of the prospects for cooperation between the two nations in the areas of semiconductor supply chain, fabrication, and testing.
“Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in this sector, building on the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Japan–India semiconductor supply chain partnership as well as ongoing partnerships under the India–Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership and Economic Security Dialogue,” said the statement. It asserted that the combined tour of the factory by Mr. Modi and Mr. Ishiba further exemplified Japan’s and India’s shared objective of developing robust, trustworthy, and dependable semiconductor supply chains. “Prime Minister Modi conveyed his appreciation to Prime Minister Ishiba for joining him in this visit and reaffirmed India’s readiness to work closely with Japan in this strategic domain,” stated the MEA. During their extensive discussions on Friday, Mr. Modi and Mr. Ishiba also discussed strengthening collaboration in the semiconductor industry. On Friday, the Indian prime minister arrived in Tokyo for a two-day visit.
