FESTIVAL

The remote Himalayan town of Anini in Arunachal Pradesh witnessed an unforgettable celebration this week as music, culture and tradition came together during the Reh Festival of the Idu Mishmi community. The festival drew large crowds this year, with thousands gathering to witness a rare cultural evening featuring legendary Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan, along with his son Aditya Narayan and his wife.

The cultural night was also attended by the Chief Minister and several senior dignitaries, giving the festival a scale and visibility never seen before in this far-flung district. For many residents, it was a proud moment as national attention turned towards Dibang Valley, known for its mountains, rivers and deeply rooted tribal traditions.

Udit Narayan, speaking during the celebrations, expressed deep admiration for the region. He described Arunachal Pradesh as “extremely beautiful” and said the warmth of the people left a lasting impression on him. “The love shown by the people during the Reh Festival of the Idu Mishmis is truly overwhelming,” he said, calling his visit to Anini a memorable experience.

In an interaction with India Today, Aditya Narayan said this was his second visit to the state after performing at the Tawang Festival in 2018. He said Anini was among the most beautiful places he had ever visited and praised the hospitality of the local people. “I feel proud that Arunachal Pradesh is a part of India. Performing here with my father is a great honour,” he said.

Aditya also pointed out that despite its natural beauty, Arunachal Pradesh is still not well known outside the country. He said information about its scenic locations has not reached many people yet, though the situation is slowly changing. He encouraged tourists to choose the hill stations of Arunachal Pradesh for future holidays.

Local MLA Mope Mihu, also speaking to India Today, said the Reh Festival was celebrated on an unprecedented scale this year. He said the presence of Udit Narayan and his family helped bring national recognition to Anini and Dibang Valley. “Their participation has given the festival a new identity,” he said.

The MLA also spoke about development work in the strategically important border district. He said Dibang Valley has seen steady progress over the last six years. He highlighted the 73-kilometre Greenfield Road Project and said June 2026 has been set as the completion deadline after a recent review meeting involving the Chief Secretary and officials of NHIDCL. While admitting delays in bridge construction, he said assurances were given after a Cabinet meeting, raising hopes of faster work ahead. “Today, Anini is on the global map, mainly due to social media,” he added.

Renowned Arunachali singer Jeli Kayi also praised Anini’s untouched beauty and urged tourists from across the world to visit the region. She encouraged travellers to experience the snow-clad mountains, clean rivers and vibrant indigenous culture of Dibang Valley.
