The high-altitude town of Tawang came alive on Friday as residents and sports enthusiasts gathered at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Sports Stadium to kick off a three-day celebration of National Sports Day. The event, organised by the Department of Sports, Tawang, in association with the Tawang District Archery Association and the Tawang Cycling Association, was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo. The opening ceremony drew a large crowd, with dignitaries including Superintendent of Police Dr. D.W. Thongon, Deputy Commander of the Tawang Brigade Colonel M. Upadhyay, and representatives of Monpa Mimang Tsogpa, along with office bearers of various district sports associations. Local leader Ngawang Tenzin, members of sports clubs, and enthusiastic residents also joined the celebration.
Speaking at the event, DC Namgyal Angmo praised the contribution of local sports organisations in nurturing young athletes and engaging the youth through regular competitions. “Sports instill discipline, teamwork, and resilience. It is heartening to see our young archers preserving the rich tradition of archery while excelling at competitive levels,” she said. District Sports Officer Sange Tsering reminded the gathering of the significance of National Sports Day, observed in honour of hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand, whose legacy continues to inspire generations. He announced a range of upcoming activities, including a cycling rally beginning from the Giant Buddha statue and several competitions that will run until August 31.
The inauguration featured floral tributes to Major Dhyan Chand and the ceremonial lighting of lamps. Young archers training under professional guidance were presented with tracksuits before competing in the keenly awaited archery tournament. Archery Results:
