Dirang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district has quickly grown into a leading destination for travellers exploring the scenic Tawang corridor. Nestled atop a hill overlooking the peaceful Dirang Valley, the monastery – formally known as Thupsung Dhargey Ling – is drawing thousands of tourists from across India this season, making it a standout attraction in the state’s famed Mon Region. Established in 2017 with the blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the monastery has become a vibrant centre of Buddhist learning, where monks and young students study and practise spiritual teachings. Its name translates to “the place of flourishing of Buddha’s speech,” highlighting its role as a hub of faith, culture and education.
The Dalai Lama’s visit during its inauguration is widely seen as a turning point, sparking a rise in both domestic and overseas tourist arrivals in the Dirang–Tawang belt. Visitors are captivated not only by the monastery’s peaceful ambience but also by the breathtaking views of lush hills, winding valleys and dramatic skies that shift throughout the day. Many describe the destination as a “slice of heaven,” praising the region’s natural beauty, traditional tribal culture and warm hospitality.
Travellers from Maharashtra, Assam and Uttar Pradesh who visited Dirang recently said their journey across the Northeast — from the wildlife marvels of Assam’s Kaziranga National Park to the pristine charm of Meghalaya’s clean Mawlynnong village — has been unforgettable, with Dirang’s serenity adding a special touch.
