By claiming that all Indian languages are national languages and that education should be given in the mother tongue, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological foundation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, attempted to put an end to the language dispute and protests against the imposition of Hindi on Monday. The group, which is about to commemorate its centenary, also talked about the divisions among Manipur’s communities and expressed optimism that the state, which is riven by conflict, will soon return to peace and normalcy.

According to the Sangh, education is provided in their mother tongue, and all Indian languages are considered national languages. Speaking to the media, RSS chief spokesperson Sunil Ambekar stated, “This is already established in the Sangh.”

The statement from the Sangh functionary comes after the state government of Maharashtra was forced to recall a circular on teaching Hindi as a third language in primary schools following protests, and several opposition-ruled states, including Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, accused the union government of pushing for the use of Hindi. The two estranged Thackeray cousins, Raj and Uddhav, joined forces on Saturday to criticise the Mahayuti government, which is led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, for requiring Hindi in schools.

The RSS has consistently insisted that the mother tongue should serve as the medium of instruction. Furthermore, the National Education Policy 2020 highlights that the mother tongue ought to be the preferred medium of instruction at least until Class 5.

Ambekar, who addressed the media following the conclusion of a three-day annual All India Pracharak meeting attended by the Sangh’s leadership, including its chief Mohan Bhagwat, stated that the discussions focused on “organisational matters” and preparations for the centenary celebrations, which will commence with the Vijaydashami festival.
