Varun Dhawan is currently awaiting the release of his spy series Citadel, which also stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu alongside him.
The biggest box office clash is when you have to choose between a film made by your father and your favourite film. Actor Varun Dhawan recalled the time when his filmmaker father David Dhawan’s comedy Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai clashed at the box office.
Released in 1998, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji while Dhawan’s comedy was headlined by Amitabh Bachchan and Govinda.
In an interview with Indianexpress.com, Varun Dhawan revealed how he thought the musical romantic drama was a “cooler” film and was impatient to watch it, much to his father’s displeasure.
“Bade Miyan Chote Miyan premiered in London – I don’t know why they did it there – and the producers got us a limousine with Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan’s faces plastered on it. We were going through the streets of London in that limousine, making funny faces at the two in the poster. But I was desperate to see Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and I didn’t even know Karan at that time!
Varun said, “I thought Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a great film but my father said, ‘Enough, I will leave you here on the streets.’ I remember telling him you can’t treat kids like this here and my father said, ‘He behaves so badly, why did I bring him here.’ Bade Miyan had a big first day because of the mass factor but obviously Kuch Kuch Hota Hai became a huge success. And finally I was launched by Karan Johar!”
The actor, who made his acting debut with Karan Johar-directed Student of the Year in 2012, is currently awaiting the release of his spy action film Citadel: Honey Bunny on Prime Video. Directed by Ra-DK, the series is written by Sita R Menon and he will be seen opposite Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Both are playing undercover agents.
Varun Dhawan will be seen in another action film Baby John after its release on November 7. This film is directed by Atlee, the director of Shahrukh Khan’s Jawaan film.
He said, “I wanted to do action, commercial, masala action (Baby John) and Raj-DK zone films. When I saw The Family Man, I thought everyone looked so good, I wanted to work with them. Both these titles, Baby John and Honey Bunny (lovely) have come at a time when I am the father of a girl! It’s just a coincidence, and I hope the universe is conspiring to make this all the more special.”
