A fresh political debate has emerged in Arunachal Pradesh after an anti-corruption activist called for the resignation of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, citing the need for a fair and independent inquiry reportedly linked to a court-monitored investigation.Nabam Tagam, Chairman of the Jan Andolan Anti-Corruption Movement, on Tuesday urged the Chief Minister to step down ahead of a preliminary probe that he claimed has been directed by the Supreme Court of India and is expected to be carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).In a statement, Tagam said that the resignation of the Chief Minister would help ensure that the inquiry is conducted without any form of administrative pressure or perceived influence. He added that such a step would also strengthen public trust in the investigation process and uphold transparency.
The Jan Andolan Anti-Corruption Movement has been actively raising the issue over the past few months, drawing attention through a series of public actions. On March 5, 2026, the group organised a 12-hour bandh across the Capital Complex region, which was observed from early morning till evening. According to organisers, the shutdown remained largely peaceful, with no major incidents reported during the protest.Tagam said the movement has consistently focused on demanding accountability and a fair probe into the matter. He noted that while one phase of the agitation was temporarily suspended in January this year following appeals from the administration, the group did not withdraw its core demands.
The campaign, however, has not been without controversy. A bandh called by the group in December 2025 was declared unlawful by the administration, which cited concerns over disruption of essential services and inconvenience to the public. Despite this, the movement has continued to gather support in certain sections.So far, there has been no official response from the Chief Minister’s Office regarding the demand for resignation. Authorities have also not issued any detailed statement on the reported court-monitored CBI inquiry, including its scope or timeline.
