NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has launched Tatkal NPS on the BHIM Payments App, aiming to reduce entry barriers to retirement savings through a simplified digital account-opening process. Announced on October 14, 2026, the facility was introduced by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).

The service enables eligible Indian citizens aged 18 to 85 to open National Pension System (NPS) accounts in three steps without visiting a branch or submitting fresh paperwork. It uses existing bank-verified KYC details, requiring users to enter their date of birth, select an eligible bank account and make an initial UPI contribution of at least ₹250. Subsequent contributions can start at ₹10, subject to applicable NPS requirements.

The facility currently supports customers of State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank and Bank of Baroda, with further bank integrations expected.

Lalitha Nataraj, managing director and CEO of NBSL, said the initiative expands BHIM’s role from facilitating payments and contributions to pension account onboarding. PFRDA chairperson S. Ramann said the partnership seeks to make retirement preparation more accessible.

Economically, the initiative could help broaden formal pension participation by lowering procedural barriers and using existing digital payment infrastructure. NPS is a low-cost, PFRDA-regulated scheme investing contributions in market-linked funds managed by regulated pension fund managers. Tax benefits apply under relevant rules, while investment returns are market-linked and not guaranteed.
