Fresh floods triggered by continuous monsoon rain affected five districts of Arunachal Pradesh during the last 24 hours, while neighbouring Assam continued to face worsening flood conditions, rising river levels and disruption of train services. Heavy rainfall also caused widespread damage in several other parts of the country.
According to the Arunachal Pradesh State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), fresh flood and rain-related incidents were reported from Siang, Papum Pare, West Kameng, Kamle and Lower Siang districts, affecting six administrative circles.
Flash floods inundated Kallek village in the Kebang circle of Siang district. Heavy rainfall also caused damage in Balijan and Tarasso villages in Papum Pare district, Lish village in West Kameng, Yada village in Kamle district and Jipu village in Lower Siang district.
Officials said nearly 1.49 lakh people have been affected by the ongoing monsoon across Arunachal Pradesh. Relief and rescue operations are continuing in the affected districts as authorities assess the damage and provide assistance to affected families.
In neighbouring Assam, one more flood-related death was reported from Charaideo district, taking the state’s rain-related death toll to 11.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 3.10 lakh people remain affected across 758 villages in Biswanath, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tinsukia districts.
The flood situation remained critical as several major rivers continued to flow above the danger level. The Brahmaputra, Dikhow, Desang and Dhansiri rivers were among those in spate. The Dikhow at Sivasagar town and the Desang at Nanglamoraghat crossed the extreme flood level, while the Dhansiri River remained in a severe flood situation at Numaligarh in Golaghat district. The Brahmaputra at Neamatighat and the Buridihing River at Khowang also continued to flow above normal levels.
Floodwaters disrupted railway connectivity in Upper Assam for the second consecutive day after tracks were submerged at several locations. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) cancelled, diverted and short-terminated a number of train services, while operating special trains to assist stranded passengers.
Rescue and relief operations are being carried out jointly by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services and district administrations in the affected areas.
Meanwhile, in Nagaland, the death toll due to flash floods and landslides in Mon district rose to nine after five more bodies were recovered. Four people remain missing, while search operations are continuing. Preliminary reports indicate that about 7,460 people have been affected and 64 houses in 93 villages across 10 districts have suffered damage.
Heavy rainfall also continued to affect several northern states. In Jammu and Kashmir, overflowing rivers and streams flooded residential areas, swept away shops and vehicles and prompted large-scale rescue operations. Officials said more than 23 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the Jammu region since Sunday, while seven others are still missing.
In Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst washed away six houses, although no casualties were reported. Following a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), educational institutions in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur districts remained closed, while landslides blocked sections of National Highway-5 in Kinnaur.
In Uttarakhand, authorities resumed the Char Dham Yatra after temporarily suspending it because of heavy rain and landslides. The Dehradun-Mussoorie road has also been reopened for light vehicles after restoration work.
