Department to learn from past experiences and adopt emerging technologies and innovative practices to improve productivity and farmer welfare.

Speaking at a departmental review meeting held on Friday, the minister stressed that officers must continuously upgrade their knowledge and stay aligned with technological advancements in the agriculture and horticulture sectors.

Wangsu stated that the success of the department should be measured by the tangible impact created in farmers’ fields. He emphasised that improvements in productivity and livelihoods would strengthen the importance of the horticulture sector.

He also cautioned officials to ensure that crop selection and recommendations are based on ground realities, advising careful assessment before promoting any agricultural practices to farmers.

Reiterating his key message, the minister called for a shift from a “lab to land” model to a “lab to land to market” approach, highlighting the importance of ensuring that scientific innovations translate into real income for farmers. He said marketing and farmer profitability must remain central to all departmental initiatives.

During the meeting, adviser Talem Taboh highlighted the need for dedicated vehicles for field officers and suggested greater consultation with local representatives in beneficiary selection. Horticulture Secretary Koj Rinya proposed strengthening research and development and forming a committee to monitor scheme implementation on the ground. Including the Horticulture Director, SHRDI head, and representatives from KVKs of Kurung Kumey and Dibang Valley, attended the review meeting.
