India’s renewable energy sector has reached a landmark milestone with the successful commissioning of the fourth unit of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has congratulated the NHPC on this achievement, which brings the project’s total operational capacity to 1,000 Megawatts. As one of the country’s most ambitious energy ventures, the project is seen as a vital step toward securing a self-reliant and sustainable power future for the Northeast and the nation.

The NHPC officially declared the commercial operation of Unit 4 effective from May 8, adding another 250 Megawatts to the national grid. Located on the Subansiri River along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, this mega project is designed to be India’s largest hydroelectric facility, with an ultimate installed capacity of 2,000 Megawatts across eight individual units. With the fourth unit now online, the project has reached exactly half of its total generation potential.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who also oversees the power and hydropower portfolios, took to social media to laud the resilience of the engineers, workers, and stakeholders involved. He emphasized that the project symbolises India’s growing commitment to environmentally sustainable energy. The achievement is particularly significant given the years of environmental and social challenges the project faced before construction resumed in earnest in 2019.

Once fully operational, the Subansiri Lower project is expected to significantly enhance energy security across the Northeast and play a pivotal role in meeting India’s clean energy targets. Recent months have seen a flurry of engineering successes at the site, including the installation of the country’s heaviest hydro rotor. Officials state that the steady advancement toward full commissioning remains a top priority to ensure a steady supply of green energy for the region’s growing industrial and domestic needs.
