Mountaineering World Cup (3)

In a first for the region, the inaugural Open National Ski Mountaineering Championship began at the picturesque Panga Teng Tso Lake, marking a significant step in placing Northeast India on the country’s winter sports map. The championship is being held under the “Winter Adventure Tawang 2026” initiative and has drawn participants, trainers, and adventure sports enthusiasts from across India. The event not only introduces a competitive platform for ski mountaineering but also reflects a growing effort to develop organised winter sports in Arunachal Pradesh.

Officials present at the inauguration described the moment as historic, saying it signals the region’s entry into the national winter sports circuit. Alongside the championship, a ski and snowboarding training programme has also started from April 5 and will continue till April 14. The main competitive event is scheduled for April 15. The initiative is aimed at promoting adventure tourism while also creating opportunities for local youth. Authorities said that the unique terrain and natural snowfall in Tawang make it an ideal destination for snow-based sports. They added that such events could help bring national attention to the region and encourage more athletes to explore its potential.

Located at a high altitude and known for its scenic beauty, Panga Teng Tso Lake has been identified as a suitable venue for winter sporting activities. Organisers believe that hosting such national-level events will help build confidence for developing long-term infrastructure in the sector. Officials also said that the championship aligns with broader plans to promote sustainable tourism in the state. By combining sports with tourism, the government aims to create new avenues of income and employment for local communities.
