Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and senior cabinet officials have moved to reassure the public that a significant fire at the Viva Energy refinery in Geelong will not result in fuel rationing. The blaze, which erupted late Wednesday, April 15, 2026, severely damaged the facility’s motor gasoline unit, sent flames 60 meters into the air, and forced local residents to shelter indoors. While the refinery is one of only two remaining in Australia and provides 10% of the national fuel supply, the government maintains that the country’s energy security remains stable under “Stage Two” of the National Fuel Security Plan.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen clarified that while petrol production has been the most impacted, the refinery’s diesel and jet fuel sections were largely spared. To compensate for any local production gaps, the government has already utilized its new strategic reserve powers to secure an additional 100 million liters of diesel from Brunei and South Korea. Officials noted that the global supply of petrol remains high, allowing for imports to bridge any shortfall. Prime Minister Albanese, currently on a diplomatic mission in Malaysia, emphasized that while global supply chains are under immense pressure due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, this specific industrial accident is not enough to trigger the “Stage Three” mandatory rationing protocols.

Authorities have urged Australians to avoid panic buying, which had already caused a 25% surge in demand across regional stations in the weeks prior to the fire. “It is important that people buy only what they need,” Minister Bowen stated, stressing that the government’s focus remains on keeping essential sectors like agriculture and freight moving. Despite the visual scale of the Geelong inferno, the administration is confident that their proactive procurement of international fuel cargoes will shield consumers from a supply collapse, keeping the nation mobile as investigators look into the mechanical failure that caused the blaze.
