Scientists at Heriot-Watt University have announced a major breakthrough toward realizing a global quantum internet, successfully linking two smaller quantum networks into a single, reconfigurable, eight-user system. This prototype is the first to demonstrate the ability to link two separate networks and flexibly distribute and swap quantum entanglement on demand. This achievement is considered a critical milestone that paves the way for a planetary web of ultra-secure communications and super-powered quantum computation.
