An awareness programme on the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Guidelines, 2026 was organised at Tawang’s Old Market on Wednesday as part of ongoing efforts to promote scientific waste management and build a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable township. The initiative brought together Assistant Commissioner Nawang Thutan, members of the Women’s Welfare Association (WWA), market welfare committees, Urban Affairs Department officials, the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) operator, shopkeepers, and local residents.
The programme focused on the implementation of four-way waste segregation at the source and highlighted the responsibilities of bulk waste generators under the SWM 2026 framework. Participants were educated on the proper segregation of biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous, and sanitary waste, along with scientific waste management practices aimed at reducing pollution and improving public sanitation.
Addressing the gathering, Assistant Commissioner Nawang Thutan stressed that effective solid waste management begins with individual responsibility. He urged residents, shopkeepers, and business establishments to adopt source segregation and work closely with the district administration to make Tawang a model town for cleanliness and sustainable waste management.
Old Market Welfare Committee Secretary Dawa Tashi appealed to traders to support the initiative by reducing the use of single-use plastic and ensuring proper waste segregation. To reinforce the campaign, cloth shopping bags were distributed among participants, encouraging eco-friendly alternatives. The district administration also called on citizens and market associations to actively support sustainable waste management practices for a cleaner and healthier Tawang.
