Japan has taken a major step toward achieving carbon neutrality by unveiling the world’s first floating hydrogen production plant off the coast of Kobe. The facility, called “Haru H2,” will produce 60 tonnes of hydrogen annually using offshore wind energy.

Funded jointly by Japanese and European investors, the project will help Japan meet its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The hydrogen will be used in fuel-cell vehicles and power generation.

Experts say Japan’s innovation could inspire other nations — including India — to adopt similar hybrid models combining wind and hydrogen technology. Environment Minister Shintaro Ito called it “a symbol of Asia’s renewable future.” Environmental analysts view this as a vital move toward decarbonising maritime and transport industries.
