The UK government has introduced a landmark Artificial Intelligence Regulation Bill aimed at curbing the misuse of AI, particularly deepfake technology. The proposed law will make it a criminal offense to create or share deepfake videos or images without consent.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that AI should be used for “progress, not propaganda.” The legislation comes amid rising concerns about synthetic media influencing elections and damaging reputations.

Under the bill, offenders could face up to five years in prison or heavy fines. The UK joins the EU and the US in setting AI boundaries while still encouraging innovation. Tech companies will also be required to include watermarking features for AI-generated content.

Industry experts have praised the move as a step toward safer digital environments, while critics argue that it may stifle creativity.
