The United States Congress has introduced new legislation aimed at curbing monopolistic practices among major tech companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple, and Meta. The bill seeks to prevent these companies from unfairly promoting their own products or collecting excessive user data.

If passed, the Digital Fairness Act will empower the Federal Trade Commission to impose hefty fines on violators and order corporate restructuring if necessary. The move follows years of public outcry over data privacy violations and alleged manipulation of online marketplaces.

Tech companies have pushed back, claiming the law would “stifle innovation” and harm smaller developers who depend on their platforms. However, bipartisan support suggests that the bill could pass by early 2026.

Analysts say this could set a global precedent, influencing similar digital regulations in Europe and Asia, including India, where the Digital Personal Data Protection Act has recently come into effect.
