Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has once again made headlines, this time producing a record-breaking performance in the Duleep Trophy at the age of just 15.
The young Indian batter achieved a major milestone while playing for East Zone against Central Zone, becoming the youngest cricketer in the history of the competition to score a half-century.
With Ishan Kishan unavailable after suffering a wrist injury, Sooryavanshi was handed the additional responsibility of captaining East Zone. The teenager responded with an assured and attacking display despite the pressure of leading the team.
He raced to his fifty off 42 balls, finding the boundary regularly with five fours and three sixes. His aggressive approach kept him in contention for a century, but his innings came to an end at 92.
Although he missed out on a hundred, Sooryavanshi had already achieved something historic. He reached his half-century at 15 years and 157 days, breaking a record that had remained in place since 1969.
Laxman Singh had previously held the distinction after registering a Duleep Trophy fifty at 16 years and 23 days. Sooryavanshi has now taken the record after 57 years.
His 92-run effort also showcased his ability to take on experienced opposition at the domestic level. The performance adds yet another notable chapter to what has been an extraordinary start to his professional career.
Earlier in the match, he had created another record by becoming the youngest captain in Duleep Trophy history. He was appointed East Zone’s stand-in captain after Kishan was forced out with a wrist injury.
