President Droupadi Murmu has officially granted her assent to the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (VB-GRAM) Bill, 2025, making it law. This act formally repeals and replaces the 2005 MGNREGA scheme. The new law mandates a 125-day wage employment guarantee per household and introduces a performance-based “Skill-Credit” system for rural laborers. Despite continuing protests from several state governments, the Union Ministry of Rural Development announced that the transition to the new digital-first framework will begin on January 1, 2026.
