Anand Mahindra has sparked widespread discussion on social media after praising Sikkim for its strict cleanliness culture and disciplined civic behaviour. In a viral post shared on X, the Mahindra Group Chairman said people who casually throw garbage on roads should avoid visiting the Himalayan state, while encouraging responsible travellers to experience Sikkim’s unique culture and natural beauty.

Sharing two viral videos, Anand Mahindra highlighted how seriously Sikkim treats cleanliness and public discipline. In his post, he wrote, “If you’re someone who casually throws trash out of your car window, then don’t even think of visiting Sikkim. But if this clip makes you smile, then packing your bags and heading there may be one of the best travel decisions you’ll ever make. Because I think what makes Sikkim a truly beautiful destination isn’t just the landscape. It’s the mindset of its people.”

One of the videos reportedly showed a man throwing an orange peel on the road before being immediately stopped and asked to pick it up. The incident quickly drew attention online, with many social media users praising the state for maintaining strict public cleanliness standards for both residents and tourists.

Mahindra’s remarks triggered a larger conversation about civic sense and public responsibility in India. Several users praised Sikkim for setting an example for other states. One social media user recalled travelling from Bagdogra to Sikkim and noted how drivers automatically followed traffic discipline, including the “no honking” culture, as soon as they entered the state.

Another user wrote that clean public spaces are not created only by cleaning workers but also by citizens who take responsibility for maintaining them. Others described Sikkim’s real beauty as not just its mountains, waterfalls and monasteries, but also the discipline and environmental awareness of its people.

For years, Sikkim has been recognised as one of India’s cleanest and most environmentally conscious states, known for its scenic landscapes, peaceful surroundings and strong focus on sustainability. Many internet users said the state’s example shows how civic discipline and public participation can significantly improve the condition of tourist destinations and urban spaces across the country.
