Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has called for a practical and result-oriented approach to achieve self-reliance in dairy and poultry production in Arunachal Pradesh. The statement came during a high-level review meeting where the Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development (AHV&DD) Department presented a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening the sectors.

The presentation, led by Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu, highlighted the department’s performance, existing challenges, recommendations of the high-level task force, and future action plans aimed at reducing the state’s dependence on imported dairy products.

Officials informed that the growing demand for milk, including from paramilitary forces stationed across the state, can be addressed through planned expansion of production capacity and improved infrastructure. They identified the lack of an integrated cold chain network, milk collection centres, chilling facilities, transportation systems and distribution networks as major challenges affecting dairy development.

The department also highlighted the importance of animal healthcare and disease prevention, noting the state’s significant progress in livestock vaccination initiatives.

Mein urged officials to critically analyse previous programmes that failed to achieve their objectives and identify the reasons behind their shortcomings. He stressed the need for strategic planning, institutional support and effective implementation to ensure sustainable growth of the dairy sector. The meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening livestock production and creating a self-reliant dairy ecosystem in Arunachal Pradesh.
