The nomination papers of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Tai Tagak for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Arunachal Pradesh were scrutinised and found valid on Tuesday, clearing the way for his candidature in the election scheduled for June 18. Officials said the scrutiny process was carried out at Nokmey Namati Hall in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Secretariat in Itanagar. No objections were reported during the examination of the nomination documents.

Tagak had filed his nomination papers on Monday for the election to the Upper House of Parliament. The Rajya Sabha election has become necessary as the term of sitting member Nabam Rebia is scheduled to end on June 23. With the BJP enjoying an overwhelming majority in the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Tagak is widely expected to secure victory and represent the state in the Rajya Sabha. The 60-member Assembly is currently dominated by the BJP, which holds 46 seats. The People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) has six legislators, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has three members. The Indian National Congress and the National People’s Party (NPP) have one legislator each, while three members are Independents.

Given the BJP’s numerical strength in the Assembly, political observers believe the party is comfortably placed to retain the seat without facing any significant challenge. The election process for the Rajya Sabha seat will continue as per the schedule announced by the Election Commission. Polling, if required, will be held on June 18, followed by the counting of votes on the same day. The Rajya Sabha serves as the Upper House of Parliament, with members elected by the elected representatives of state legislative assemblies. Arunachal Pradesh sends one representative to the House.
