The Arunachal Pradesh government signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Greenko Demwe Power Limited for the implementation of the 1750 MW Demwe Lower Hydroelectric Project in Lohit district, marking a major step in the state’s push towards large-scale renewable energy development.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein announced the signing of the agreement on May 27 and described the project as a significant development in Arunachal Pradesh’s hydropower sector. He said the initiative reflects the state government’s efforts to utilise its vast hydroelectric potential for sustainable growth and clean energy generation.

The Demwe Lower Hydroelectric Project is proposed on the Lohit River near Parasuram Kund and is considered one of the largest hydropower projects being developed with private sector participation in Arunachal Pradesh.

According to officials, the project is expected to generate nearly 7,326 million units of clean energy annually. The government said the power generated from the project will contribute to India’s renewable energy goals while also supporting economic development in the region.

Officials said the project is likely to bring several socio-economic benefits to Lohit district and nearby areas. These include expansion of road and other infrastructure facilities, improved connectivity, employment opportunities for local people and increased investment in the region.

“With an installed generation capacity of 1,750 MW, the project will further strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s position in the country’s renewable energy landscape,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.

The state government also reiterated its commitment to responsible and sustainable hydropower development. Officials said the focus would remain on balancing economic progress with environmental protection and the welfare of local communities affected by the project.

The Demwe Lower Hydroelectric Project is expected to open a new phase of infrastructure growth and economic activity in Arunachal Pradesh while reinforcing the state’s growing role in clean energy production in the Northeast.
