Google has announced a big update coming throughout 2026 covering many areas for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in. The overhaul features a brand new interface built on the “Material 3 Expressive” design language, including customizable widgets, new fonts and dynamic animations that adapt smoothly to any screen shape, from ultrawide displays to circular layouts. A cornerstone of the update is “Immersive Navigation,” the biggest improvement to Google Maps in a decade. It features vivid 3D renderings of buildings, terrain and overpasses, as well as real-time lane-level guidance that highlights traffic lights and stop signs for safer and more intuitive navigation.

Entertainment also gets a major boost thanks to full HD video playback at 60fps for parked cars, allowing users to stream content via apps such as YouTube. For safety, the system automatically switches to audio-only mode when the vehicle is put into gear. Plus, audio quality gets a boost with the introduction of Dolby Atmos spatial sound support in compatible cars. On the AI front, Google is expanding Gemini’s integration so that it can offer contextual and proactive assistance. Phones with Gemini Intelligence have features like “Magic Cue” which can scan through your messages, email and calendar to suggest one-tap replies or directions. For cars with Google built-in, Gemini can even provide car-specific diagnostics, such as explaining what a dashboard warning light means or how much stuff you can fit in the trunk.
