The Arunachal Pradesh government has officially signed a landmark Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Greenko Demwe Power Limited to develop the 1,750-megawatt (MW) Demwe Lower Hydroelectric Project. Executed on a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) basis, this initiative marks one of the largest private-sector hydropower collaborations ever undertaken in the state, signaling a major boost for India’s clean energy goals.
The mega-infrastructure project will be constructed on the Lohit River, situated near the prominent sites of Parshuram Kund and Brahma Kund. It is designed to house five generating units of 342 MW each, alongside an additional 40 MW unit. Once fully operational, the project is projected to generate roughly 7,326 million units of clean electricity annually, contributing significantly to national energy security.
Engineering specifications reveal that the development will feature a massive concrete gravity dam standing 163.12 meters high with a crest length of 474.35 meters. The facility will include a reservoir capacity of 516.38 million cubic meters, an advanced multi-gate spillway system for flood control, six diversion tunnels, and vertical Francis turbines.
Beyond generating renewable energy, the state government emphasizes that the project will bring immense socio-economic transformation to the region. Enhanced connectivity via Assam’s Dibrugarh airport and Tinsukia railhead will support the site. Local authorities expect the venture to spark significant infrastructure expansion, drive regional investments, and create extensive direct and indirect employment opportunities for local communities.
