In an astonishing feat of mountaineering survival, veteran Nepali climbing guide Dawa Sherpa has been found alive near Mount Everest Base Camp after vanishing in brutal conditions six days ago. Nicknamed “Hillary” for his vast experience, the 52-year-old mountain guide disappeared on May 30 during a grueling descent from just below the high-altitude “death zone.” Search and rescue efforts had initially been delayed due to expedition paperwork complications, and subsequent aerial searches yielded no sign of the veteran climber. Believing he had perished in the extreme Himalayan elements, his devastated family in Kathmandu had already entered the second day of traditional funeral rituals when the miraculous news broke. Dawa was spotted by a Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee route-clearing crew as he was heroically crawling alone down the snowy slopes near the treacherous Khumbu Icefall, a perilous area where the seasonal climbing ladders and ropes had already been dismantled. Rescuers immediately provided food and water before a medical helicopter evacuated him to HAMS Hospital in the capital. Doctors in the intensive care unit confirmed that while Dawa is suffering from severe frostbite, trauma, and acute dehydration, he remains fully conscious and stable. His miraculous survival marks a joyous conclusion to an exceptionally busy climbing season that saw over 1,000 successful summits but also claimed the lives of at least five other climbers.
