A new study utilizing the Iceberg Index, developed by MIT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has quantified the potential immediate impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the US labor market. The research finds that current AI systems are already capable of replacing work completed by 11.7% of the US workforce, equating to approximately $1.2 trillion in wages. The index simulates how AI changes tasks across sectors like finance and healthcare, providing state and local governments with detailed data for planning workforce retraining and education initiatives.
