Tension has once again gripped the Assam-Arunachal border. Amid a clash with unidentified people from the Arunachal Pradesh side in a disputed border area, 18 people from Assam were injured in firing. It is learnt that the condition of four of the injured is critical.
The incident took place in Mingmang village amid the tensions created by the border dispute with Arunachal Pradesh. The clash between the two sides reportedly began over allegations of encroachment in the border area. After the situation turned more volatile, it is alleged that the unidentified people opened fire.
The injured were immediately admitted to hospital. Four of them, who are in critical condition, have been shifted to Dibrugarh Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, to control the situation, the Chief Secretaries of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh held discussions, and the DGPs of both states are also coordinating Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed. Additional forces of Assam Police have been deployed to the spot.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam Police have been instructed to take measures to de-escalate tensions and prevent the situation from deteriorating further. At the same time, the Chief Minister said that Assam Police have been given strict instructions to ensure that not an inch of Assam’s land goes into anyone else’s possession under any circumstances.
It may be noted that the border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh is not new .The two states have been carrying forward the process of boundary demarcation through discussions for several decades to resolve this decades-old dispute. However, several areas along the border are still sensitive. The latest clash has once again increased tensions in those areas.
