Under the Central Government’s flagship clean energy initiative, ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’, 40 lakh (4 million) families across the country have successfully installed solar power systems (rooftop solar) on their roofs. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, shared this information on social media and congratulated the people of the country. The Union Minister mentioned that this scheme is not just an energy generation project; it is bringing a massive transformation across the entire nation. Through this, instead of remaining mere consumers of electricity, ordinary citizens of India are now turning into electricity producers. This means that after meeting their household requirements, they can supply the surplus electricity to the grid.
As a result of this scheme, the monthly electricity expenses of the beneficiary families have reduced significantly. Many families have already moved toward receiving zero electricity bills. To reduce the initial cost of installing solar panels, the government is providing subsidies directly to the beneficiaries, making it easily accessible for middle-class families. According to the Minister, with every solar rooftop setup, the country is moving toward energy security, a reduction in carbon emissions, and the goal of a self-reliant ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
Under this scheme, which was launched in February 2024, the Central Government has set an ambitious target of installing rooftop solar systems in the homes of 1 crore (10 million) families across the country by March 2027. Reaching 40 lakh household rooftop solar connections so far is being considered a major milestone and a huge success for the government in this sector.
