During the summer season, the demand for frozen desserts increases significantly in India. Many people consume various frozen desserts thinking they are ice cream. Although both these types of food products look identical, there is a subtle difference between them. However, this detail is written so minutely on the labels that it becomes almost impossible for consumers to be aware of it.
According to the guidelines of the food safety body FSSAI, only those food products can be labeled as ice cream where the source of fat is dairy products like milk. On the other hand, similar food products that use palm oil or other vegetable oils/fats instead of dairy products are classified under the frozen dessert or frozen confection category.
In the year 2025, the size of India’s ice cream market has exceeded ₹31,000 crores. According to data from the market research firm IMARC, the market size of ice cream in India is growing at twice the rate compared to frozen desserts.
